Reasonable concept spoiled by passages that reminded me of those old "Confessions of a..." movies (just add taxi driver / window cleaner / plumber.) The Abyss Beyond Dreams 2. I bought this book because it was on a list of best sci fi books and I honestly don't know why it was on the list, there are severe pacing issues and it reads like someone tried to turn a collection of short stories into a novel and really struggled. Never returns.
I've read everything he's written... and not just once.
Many so called SF authors are not capable of this, so the plots become thin and amount to no more than transferring todays ships/planes into space usually wrapped into some form of alien invasion plot.

I think he is the best modern science fiction writer of this generation. I very much doubt I will be reading him again unless he rediscovers what made him good in the first place. It's a good read but I do get a sense of Deja Vu with Dreaming the Void. 1200 Prime species home start system and renegade Prime colony star (the Dyson Pair) quarantined behind force field by the Anomine.
There are a couple of existing people from that universe in the storyline but, for the most part, the novel is set on a new world with new characters to enjoy.
Sure, he tends to be a little long winded, but I can overlook that in the presence of excellence.

This novel continues events on the planet Bienvenido in Hamilton's far-future Commonwealth universe. I have now read all of the Commonwealth series and this just isn't my favorite, In fact, unless you read the far superior Night Without Stars, I'm not sure it's even understandable.
