Reasonable concept spoiled by passages that reminded me of those old "Confessions of a..." movies (just add taxi driver / window cleaner / plumber.) The Abyss Beyond Dreams 2. I bought this book because it was on a list of best sci fi books and I honestly don't know why it was on the list, there are severe pacing issues and it reads like someone tried to turn a collection of short stories into a novel and really struggled. Never returns.

I've read everything he's written... and not just once.

Many so called SF authors are not capable of this, so the plots become thin and amount to no more than transferring todays ships/planes into space usually wrapped into some form of alien invasion plot.

I think he is the best modern science fiction writer of this generation. I very much doubt I will be reading him again unless he rediscovers what made him good in the first place.
