A decent introductory talk and some knowledgeable room guides, plus the small Mr. Turner film exhibition and video were the highlights. John Selde, a local mason, was responsible for much of the internal and external decoration, including the Duke’s crest of ‘keystones with carved wings’ which appear above each window. Petworth's huge, world-class collection of fine art and sculpture is laid out pretty much as it was in the estate's golden age when many great artists – including, most famously, JMW Turner – were invited to stay.
