Their side of the house is, of course, private, but that still leaves plenty of grand rooms and huge spaces, plus the 'downstairs' kitchens and servants' quarters, for visitors to explore.

And with its vast, landscaped park setting, this National Trust property in Sussex is worth at least a day of your holiday. With its iconic red-brick walls butting right up to the town, it has fabulous views over the South Downs as well as its own glorious vistas.

A decent introductory talk and some knowledgeable room guides, plus the small Mr. Turner film exhibition and video were the highlights. John Selde, a local mason, was responsible for much of the internal and external decoration, including the Duke’s crest of ‘keystones with carved wings’ which appear above each window. Petworth's huge, world-class collection of fine art and sculpture is laid out pretty much as it was in the estate's golden age when many great artists – including, most famously, JMW Turner – were invited to stay.
Grazed by a herd of fallow deer, it's a delightful place to walk – and you can bring your dog, though in some areas you'll need to use a lead.
