So it is with SundanceTV's The Red Road (Thursday, 9/8c), a lugubrious six-episode drama that's as overwrought as it is underwhelming, representing a rare misfire for the channel that brought us such outstanding originals as Top of the Lake and Rectify last year.

After a terrible tragedy and coverup occurs involving the cop's wife (Julianne Nicholson of August: Osage County and Boardwalk Empire), an unholy alliance is forged between the cop and Phillip Kopus (Jason Momoa of Wolves and Game of Thrones), a dangerous member of the tribe that will come back to haunt all involved.
Jason Momoa is great as the bad son, ex-con, returned home to stir up trouble and Martin Henderson no less compelling as the Cop who pursues him. The "Red Road" is a metaphor for living a spiritual way of life.
The road of great expectations invariably contains its share of potholes. Excellent series.

My only complaint is that there was not a season 3 to show the aftermath of the ending to season 2.
