As long as you understand that I respect your feelings about 'nakama' as much as you respect mine, then I have no problems hearing from those who don't treat the word with the damn near worship that some of us do in here. Nakama can easily be translated into friends or crewmates. You don't have to like them. I think it just depends on what your first exposure to One Piece (and manga/anime in general) was. That's too impersonal for what we're trying to convey.
I like it. 'Nakama' characterizes how I feel about so many of my friends and about the Strawhats. Funimation's subs may not look as good but they're more accurate, and professional. It's not the word itself. A companion is someone you have a strong relationship, and it doesn't always have to be a friendly one so long as you're going through your lives together.If i would follow the english subtitles (and i doubt all of them are wrong) Luffy teels bad guys how their definition of nakama is wrong, Luffy actually says such things a lot. I'd like the better arguments be heard regardless of the most popular opinion. Vivi is a nakama, but not a crew mate. For those of you who have come to accept nakama as a special term to use in your life, more power to you. A group of friends, classmates, coworkers. I had always assumed that One Piece continued to be fansubbed because there is no world wide distributor, but if people are only fansubbing because they want to profit off of others' hard work, then I'm a bit more uneasy about the whole thing.I agree with you. "I would have preferred for it to be translated, but in all official versions of the manga and anime it is.
Just because someone who has been religiously watching OP for years, subbed, and loves the word 'nakama', doesn't mean they should have an instinctual lashing out at any other representation of OP.
