He's busy fighting so you can ambush him with grenades easily. Destroy his sled to neuter him and stay on the move using the jump pads. You can kill some enemies from here though. Take them all out and you'll find a vent you can punch through.
Turn around and take the main path now. We'll be rewarded with the OK, now let's continue on. I've just finished mission 3 but the very first combat encounter continues to stay red even after finishing it. You now have to drop down to the big arena up ahead. There are a ton of fodder enemies, so you should set them on fire and light them up with your plasma rifle for great armor drops. There are more fodder enemies here of course, but there's also a Doom Hunter. From where we entered this area, head into the room on the left and look for a button you can press on the computers nearby. Break the power supply here to get by and go through the small gap on the left to a room with some huge pistons.
