Hosman’s volunteer and community involvement includes serving as the Chapter Advisor for the Alpha Gamma Delta Women’s Fraternity at the UWF and as a board member of the Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce.

Working her way up from the bottom at UWF, Bense established the Archaeology Institute, Department of Anthropology, and the state-wide Florida Public Archaeology Network. Asked to deliver the commencement speech at her alma mater, Virginia State University, she shared what drove her to keep trying.“Never be afraid of failure, but please be terrified of regret.”She goes on to say that many of us have dreams that seemingly disappear as we come against failure after failure. Martha Dunagin Saunders has held leadership roles in higher education for nearly 35 years. On June 5, 2016, she was crowned Miss USA 2016 by outgoing titleholder Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma. In 2016, Deshauna became the first Miss USA to currently serve in the U.S. military.

In honor of Veterans Day, I want to share the inspiring story of Army Captain Deshauna Barber.

Don’t write off the relationship too quickly. She is married and has one son. 2016 was one of the blackest years African Americans have had in a long time. I have worked with Garth since 2013 and he has transformed the way I conduct my business and finances. Her life story is exhilarating and moves everyone to do better and be stronger in life. The first half of Barber's term as Miss USA was certainly busy. The class raised more than $221,000 in cash and in-kind donations to see the project through in six short months.Actively committed to her community, Hatt volunteers on the advisory board for the USO of Northwest Florida, is an advisory board member of the Pensacola Chapter of the Navy League, serves as a board member for the Jerry Maygarden Center for Financial Literacy at the University of West Florida, a UWF Executive Mentor for the College of Business, a Big with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northwest Florida School to Work Program, a Pensacola State College Foundation Board Member, past Treasurer of the Florida Public Relations Association - Pensacola Chapter and Board of Trustee for ARC Gateway, and actively supports and promotes Financial Literacy and her community wherever she goes. In addition, this position must work closely to develop and cultivate resilient relationships with our state, federal, county, municipal, for-profit and nonprofit community partners.Before joining the county as county administrator, Gilley served as the associate vice president of external affairs for the president at the University of West Florida. This includes producing positive outcomes in the following areas:  leadership, vision, fundraising, marketing, client services, community awareness, volunteer relations, and coordinating relations with the Board of Directors.Shell has worked in the area of Child Services for 32 years. We do know that, don’t we? Her volunteer services include working with the Pensacola Opera Board, American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society, Children's Home Society, and Trinitas Christian School.Gilley earned her master's degree in public administration from the University of Florida and a bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations and communications from the University of Southern Mississippi. The woman came up to her suggesting that Deshauna could become Miss USA as she was the most beautiful girl she had ever seen.At first, reluctant to enter a world which was frowned upon by the army, Deshauna entered the Miss District of Columbia pageant in 2009 after much consolation by the mystery woman. But one thing she never did was resign to her fears of losing.Her purpose was thrown in her laps by this woman, as if the heaven threw it to her by accident but this became her goal, her dream, her obsession for years to come. What are some ways to keep us motivated in those times? From sports to politics to music to technology, we dominated and excelled on every stage. She uses her own twist of comedy and story-telling to inspire her audience.Deshauna, through her journey, has proven that failure is a part and parcel of everyone’s lives but how the person takes the failure in their stride and walk out of it with head held high is what matters at the end of the day.
