Henry Thomas “Tom” James, former dean of the Stanford School of Education and an accomplished educator and researcher, died Sept. 30 in Golden Valley, Minn. The book was followed by ‘The Ambassadors’ (1903), and ‘The Golden Bowl’ (1904).

In his classic essay For most of his life James harboured ambitions for success as a playwright. James was born at 21 Washington Place in New York City on 15 April 1843.

There, in small rooms in Bolton Street off Piccadilly, he wrote the major James’s reputation was founded on his versatile studies of “the American girl.” In a series of witty tales, he pictured the “self-made” young woman, the bold and brash American innocent who insists upon American standards in European society.

Critics, however, deplored his tendency to write of the life of the mind, rather than of action.

He then left America and lived for a time in Paris, France before moving to London, England in 1876. Perhaps his most valuable contribution was his favourable assessment of fellow expatriate James was one of the great letter-writers of any era.
